Smyrna, September 1922: Memories of “others”
An illustrated presentation by Dr Victoria Solomonidis-Hunter FKC (UCL). The great fire of Smyrna was witnessed and experienced by Greeks, Turks, Europeans and Americans who were present in the city during the fateful days of September 1922 and survived through the ordeal to tell their stories.
Based on primary sources, this presentation focuses on the memories of non-Greeks: British, American and Turkish “voices” speak of the loss of Smyrna and the aftermath of the fire, providing a thought-provoking perspective on the tragic events.
