Maths Workshops for Children and Teenagers
How and why did maths begin? How has it been helping us over the centuries to better our lives? Can we add cats and houses? Were prime numbers discovered by early humans? Can you keep a mathematical fact secret? Who wrote the first proof? Is there such thing as multiple infinities? Join mathematician Ioanna Georgiou for an afternoon of mathematical storytelling and exploration!
Session 1: ages 10-12
Time: 2-3 pm
In this wonderful workshop intended for children aged 10-12 years old we will consider how and why maths started and how it has been helping us over the centuries to better our lives. We will use ancient fun stories to discover mathematical methods that still help us solve problems today. Why did Egyptians want to add mice and houses?
Session 2: ages 13-16
Time: 3.30-5 pm
In the second workshop for 13-16 year old teenagers, we will consider some questions about the origins of mathematics and see if prime numbers could have been discovered by early humans! Old stories from ancient Greece and the Pythagoreans will help us explore the concept of proof and how it changed mathematics for ever. We will also look at some much more recent mathematical discoveries such as multiple infinities. Join mathematician Ioanna Georgiou for an afternoon of mathematical storytelling and exploration.
Tickets are £15 per student. Please note adults cannot participate in the workshop.
Ioanna Georgiou is a maths educator and author of Mathematical Adventures! and Peculiar Deaths of Famous Mathematicians, illustrated by Asuka Young and published by Tarquin. Using stories she facilitates learners drawing connections between the ‘school’ and ‘life’ maths. Seeing purpose in learning of maths is of the highest priority to make this learning meaningful and lasting!
