POSTPONED! Aspects and Visions of Greece in European Travellers’ Imagery from the Renaissance onwards

New date for this event to be announced soon

The Board of Directors of the Panayotis & Effie Michelis Foundation organises a discussion about its newly published book ‘Greece in European Travellers’ Imagery (15th – 19th centuries): Identities, alterities, metamorphoses’ by Dr Aphrodite Kouria.

Keynote speakers:

Professor Bettany Hughes, Historian, author and broadcaster

Dr Theodoros Koutsogiannis, Curator, Hellenic Parliament Art Collection

Dr Aphrodite Kouria, Art Historian

The speakers will guide us through the rich visual material presented in the book, focusing on the main thematic cycles of the travellers’ imagery (views of cities and landscapes, ancient ruins and costumes), with the contribution of relevant travellers’ texts. They will consider the multiple and interesting aspects of these illustrations, whose scope transcends, in some cases, the boundaries and contents of travel literature; this is documented in philhellenic iconography, European painting, and Greek art of the 19th century.

The event is supported by the Hellenic Centre
