Greek Crisis and its Fictions

The speaker will discuss the sociopolitical circumstances that led to the Greek economic crisis of 2010 and the major political landmarks during its unfolding in the decade to follow. The talk, through the study of various cultural texts (photographs, blogposts, poetry) will show us how to inquire into modes of representing the crisis in the social and cultural spheres and how to distinguish between its different aspects.
Eleni Papargyriou is an Assistant Professor of Modern Greek Literature at the University of Patras. She taught at King’s College London between 2009–13 and has held research and teaching positions at the University of Vienna, Oxford University, Princeton University, the Hellenic Open University and the University of Ioannina. She has published the monograph Reading Games in the Greek Novel (Legenda 2011) and numerous articles on Greek modernism, intertextuality and the novel and the rapport between literary text and photographic image. She has co-edited the volumes Camera Graeca: Photographs, Narratives, Materialities (Ashgate 2015), Cavafy Pop: Readings of C.P. Cavafy in Popular Culture (Journal of Greek Media and Culture 2015) and Greece in British Women’s Literary Imagination (1913-2013) (Peter Lang 2017). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Greek Media and Culture. She is currently working on a book-length project on the Greek literary photobook.
