Memories of the English School

Friday 20 Sep 2019

“Memories of the English School. An Alumni Reunion” and Book Presentation of: The English School, Nicosia Cyprus: A historical account 1900 to 1960 by Kyriacos Demetriades

The English School in Nicosia was founded in 1900 by Canon Frank Newham as a nondenominational school aimed at providing the best of British style secondary education to the diverse Cypriot people. The School has played a significant role in establishing Cyprus as one of the most educated countries in the world, creating enduring cultural, educational and commercial bonds between Cyprus and the UK, and facilitating the career advancement of young Cypriots in Great Britain and other English-speaking countries.

The event marks the determination of the hundreds of UK alumni to celebrate the success of the School, to meet fellow alumni and reminisce about their days in the School and how the School helped them fulfil their aspirations.

The occasion will be marked by the presentation of a book that chronicles the first 60 years of the School’s life, written by Kyriakos Demetriades who was a pupil at the School in the 1950s.

Speakers: Professor Kypros Nicolaides and Mr Harry Sophoclides
