Artist profile

Elena Papadopoulou was born in Limassol, Cyprus where she lives and works. She has been working as an icon painter since 1995. After having been trained in wood preservation she started painting on wooden surfaces, carefully adapting the visual elements and figures of the hagiographic subject to the nature of the reclaimed would (old doors and windows), taking into account the shape as well as the alterations of time on the wood’s texture.
Working within the Byzantine visual system, Elena Papadopoulou tries her best to creatively elaborate on its formalistic possibilities, Free minded and open to interpretation, without any conservatism or self-restraint she initiates a dynamic between Byzantine iconography and modern art.
