Annual Matti Egon lecture: ‘The True Story of the Trojan War?’

Tuesday 05 Dec 2023

The Trojan War is one of the world’s greatest legends. But was there a real war, and if so, when? Recently the question has been transformed by dramatic new discoveries in archaeology, including the re-excavation of Troy itself, and by fascinating new finds in the Hittite diplomatic archive.

In this illustrated talk, which is a fundraiser for the Greek Archaeological Committee UK (GACUK), Michael Wood takes a fresh look at the story and suggests that it is now possible to point to a real war in the early 13th c BCE which could be the origin of the later legend.

Michael Wood is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester. Among his many film series are In the Footsteps ofAlexander the Great and In Search of the Trojan War.
